Schaffhausen tourism is a charming, compact corner of northern Switzerland, famed for the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest plain waterfall, which thunders over rocks and attracts visitors from across the world.The canton’s capital has a beautifully painted old town, a hilltop fortress called Munot, and Stein am Rhein is a fairytale village of frescoed houses beside the river. Boat rides take you to the base of the falls, and cruises run on the Rhine. Zürich is only 45 minutes away, so Schaffhausen is a classic day trip. Summer and spring are best, when the water flow is strongest.

May to August has the strongest flow at the Rhine Falls, while April to October is good for walks and boat trips. Winter is quiet and icy.
A day trip from Zürich covers the falls, the old town and Stein am Rhein. An overnight stay is not necessary.
Take a direct train to Neuhausen Rheinfall, about 50 minutes, then walk 5 minutes to the viewpoints. Guided tours also run from Zürich.
