Schwyz tourism is closely tied to Swiss identity, since this canton gave the country its name and its flag. Green hills, pilgrimage towns and the lake come together here, and the scenery is a classic mix of meadow, forest and peaks.Mount Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains, is the top attraction, reached by Europe’s oldest mountain railway. Einsiedeln has a famous baroque abbey and a pilgrimage tradition, and Brunnen is a pleasant lakeside village. The canton is easy to visit as a day trip from Lucerne or Zürich, though a night on Rigi for sunrise is memorable. Plan one or two days, in clear spring-to-autumn weather.
