Maranhão tour packages combine an extraordinary desert-like landscape with a historic Portuguese-style old town. São Luís is a UNESCO-listed city of blue-tiled colonial buildings and reggae culture, while Lençóis Maranhenses National Park has vast white dunes that fill with turquoise lagoons after the rains. The gateway town is Barreirinhas, and the waterside village of Alcântara has atmospheric ruins. For the full lagoon effect, travel between June and September, when water levels are highest.

June to September is the best period for the Lençóis lagoons, as they are fullest after the rains. From October to December the lagoons shrink and the landscape turns drier.
Four days cover São Luís and the Lençóis Maranhenses. Add two more days for Alcântara or a longer stay at the dunes.
Fly to São Paulo or Rio via a Gulf or European hub and take a domestic flight to São Luís. Barreirinhas is then a drive of about four hours.
