Xochimilco preserves a network of Aztec-era canals, where brightly painted trajinera boats float past floating gardens. Families and groups hire boats for a few hours, enjoying food from passing vendors and mariachi bands. Xochimilco tour packages are popular with groups and are best on a weekday, when the canals are quieter, and the nearby island of the Dolls offers a longer excursion.
