Cuernavaca was a retreat of Aztec emperors and later of Spanish nobles, Tepoztlán is a mystical Pueblo Mágico below a hilltop pyramid, and Xochicalco is a UNESCO-listed hilltop archaeological site. Spas, gardens, craft markets and hotel pools add variety, so the state suits families as well as couples. Two days suit most visitors, and the dry months are the best.
