Tamaulipas tour packages cover the Gulf of Mexico coast in the north-east, with the port of Tampico, its colourful old centre and the long beaches of Playa Miramar. Inland, the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve is a cloud forest rich in birds and orchids. Most governments advise against travel to much of Tamaulipas because of security concerns, so check current guidance and avoid the state unless a trusted operator confirms conditions. Autumn and winter are the most comfortable seasons.
