Veracruz tour packages run along the Gulf of Mexico coast, a state of Afro-Caribbean music, coffee hills and ancient ruins. The port of Veracruz hosts lively evenings of son jarocho and danzón in the square, Xalapa is a university city with an excellent anthropology museum, and El Tajín, near Papantla, is a UNESCO-listed pyramid city. Catemaco offers a volcanic lake and the home of local shamans. Four to five days work well, and November to April is the best period.

November to April is drier and cooler; the Gulf coast has hurricanes and heavy rain from June to October.
