Gimli is a lakeside town on Lake Winnipeg, about an hour north of the city, settled by Icelandic immigrants in the 1870s. A giant Viking statue stands by the harbour, and each August the Islendingadagurinn festival celebrates Icelandic culture. The beach and pier are lively in summer, and fresh pickerel fish and chips are a local treat. It is a pleasant day trip from Winnipeg.
