The Thousand Islands are an archipelago of around 1,800 islands in the St. Lawrence River on the Canada and US border, near Gananoque and Kingston. Boat cruises pass castles built on tiny islands, including Boldt Castle on the US side, and glide through narrow channels. Kayaking and fishing are popular, and Kingston’s Fort Henry has summer military drills. It is about 3 hours from Toronto or 2 hours from Ottawa.
