Piha is a wild black-sand surf beach on Auckland’s west coast, about 45 minutes from the city, backed by bush-covered hills and dominated by the volcanic outcrop Lion Rock. Walkers can climb to nearby lookouts or follow the track to Kitekite Falls. Strong currents make swimming safe only between the flags patrolled by lifeguards. Piha is a popular place for photography at sunset, and the surf cafés serve good coffee.
