Gisborne tour packages go to the far eastern corner of the North Island, where the sun rises over the Pacific among the earliest in the world. Known as Tairāwhiti, the region has strong Māori traditions, uncrowded surf beaches and a growing wine and food scene, especially Chardonnay and fresh seafood. Captain Cook first landed in New Zealand here in 1769, and the coastline is dotted with historic sites. It is remote, so allow time for the drive, and visit between November and April for the best weather.

November to April is warm and sunny, with good surfing and beach weather. Autumn is ideal for wine tasting at harvest.
Two nights are enough for the town, nearby beaches and a winery or two. A longer East Cape drive needs three to four days.
Air New Zealand flies from Auckland to Gisborne in about an hour. By road it is a long drive of six to seven hours via Rotorua or the Waioeka Gorge.
