Hokianga is a quiet, sparsely populated harbour on Northland’s west coast, with a deep Māori history and giant sand dunes at its mouth. The nearby Waipoua Forest holds Tāne Mahuta, the largest known living kauri tree, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. Ferries cross the harbour at Rawene, and boat trips explore the mangroves. It is a good stop on a loop between the Bay of Islands and Auckland.
