Nearby are the gold rush village of Arrowtown, the lakeside town of Wanaka and the rugged scenery of Glenorchy. On the coast, Dunedin has Scottish heritage and wildlife-rich peninsulas, and Oamaru offers penguin colonies. Otago is also known for Pinot Noir. Summer suits lakes and hiking, and winter is peak ski season. Allow at least four days.
