Stewart Island (Rakiura) is New Zealand’s third island, reached by a one-hour ferry from Bluff or a short flight from Invercargill. Most of it is national park, and its quiet bays hold the best chance to see wild kiwi in daylight. Oban, the only village, has a handful of cafés and boat operators. Southern lights, called the aurora australis, can sometimes be seen in winter.
