Waikato tour packages combine green farmland, famous film locations and glowworm caves in the heart of the North Island. Hobbiton near Matamata is the working set for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, while the Waitomo Caves glitter with thousands of glowworms. The region also covers the Coromandel Peninsula, with beaches such as Cathedral Cove, and stretches south to Lake Taupō. Hamilton, the main city, is about 90 minutes from Auckland. Spring to autumn is the best period for visiting.

November to April is warm and dry, ideal for the Coromandel beaches and Hobbiton gardens. Winter is cooler, but the caves can be visited year-round.

Hamilton, Matamata and Waitomo are about 1.5 to 2.5 hours by road from Auckland. Many tour operators run guided day trips combining Hobbiton and Waitomo.
