Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are the highlights, offering guided walks and heli-hikes on the ice. The coast also holds the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, the pounamu (greenstone) craft town of Hokitika and quiet beaches with wild surf. Rain is common, which keeps the forest vivid and the waterfalls full. Plan two to three days and carry waterproofs, and visit from October to April.
