Lamu County tour packages are for those who prefer slow travel. Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa, a car-free maze of coral-stone houses, carved doors and donkey lanes. Shela village has a long, quiet beach and whitewashed villas, and dhow trips lead to Manda and Pate islands. The Lamu Cultural Festival and the Maulidi celebrations bring visitors from around the world. Some governments advise against travel to mainland Lamu near the Somali border, so keep to the islands and follow current advisories.

December to March and July to October are dry and pleasant, with cooling breezes. Heavy rains from April to June make some boats and roads difficult, and many guesthouses close.
Three to four nights allow you to explore Lamu Old Town, Shela and a dhow trip. A fifth night suits Manda or Kiwayu.
Fly from Nairobi or Mombasa to Manda airstrip, then take a short boat ride to Lamu Island. There are no cars on the island, so visitors walk or use donkeys and boats.
