Badghis tourism offers a glimpse of the remote north-west, where rolling steppe hills run towards Turkmenistan. The province is known for its wild pistachio woodlands, which are harvested every year, and for the Murghab river valley, which has fed farms and villages for centuries. The capital Qala-i-Naw is a small market town and the best base for exploring. Sightseeing infrastructure is minimal and the open landscape is the main attraction. Spring, when the hills turn green and the pistachio trees bloom, is the loveliest time. Please note that travel to Badghis is currently discouraged by most governments, including India’s, because of security risks.
