Bamyan tourism has become Afghanistan’s best-known travel story because of the extraordinary landscapes of the central highlands. The Bamiyan Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where huge Buddha statues, destroyed in 2001, once stood in cliffs honeycombed with caves and monasteries. A few hours away, Band-e Amir National Park has deep-blue lakes divided by natural travertine dams. Hazara hospitality, ruined hilltop citadels and high Hindu Kush scenery complete the picture. Summer is the most comfortable season, while winters are very cold. Travel advisories from India and most other governments currently recommend against visiting Bamyan.

June to September is best, with clear weather for Band-e Amir and the valley. Winters are harsh, with deep snow.
Three days cover the Buddha niches, nearby citadels and a day trip to Band-e Amir.
Most visitors fly to Kabul, then travel by road or fly to Bamyan. Check current advisories, as most governments discourage travel.
