Panjshir tourism centres on a narrow, dramatic valley north-east of Kabul, where the Panjshir River runs between steep Hindu Kush ridges. The valley, long associated with emerald mining and with the commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, is dotted with orchards, mulberry trees and small villages. The capital Bazarak holds the hilltop tomb of Massoud, a place of pilgrimage for many Afghans. The mountain scenery is outstanding in spring and summer, while winters are bitterly cold. Most governments, including India’s, currently advise against travel to Panjshir, so check official advisories before making any plans.
