Parwan tourism combines archaeology with a famous mountain crossing just north of Kabul. The ancient city of Begram, a summer capital of the Kushan Empire, gave up a celebrated hoard of Indian ivories, Roman glass and Chinese lacquer, which shows how important Silk Road trade once was. The capital Charikar is renowned for its knives, and the Salang Pass carries the main highway over the Hindu Kush. Spring and early autumn are best, since the pass can be snow-bound in winter. Because of the security situation, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and many other governments advise against visiting Parwan for now.

Parwan is about an hour north of Kabul by road, so travellers would first fly to Kabul. Official advisories currently discourage travel, so check them first.
