Qinghai tourism takes you to the north-eastern Tibetan plateau, a land of high lakes, grasslands and monasteries. Qinghai Lake is China’s largest saltwater lake, framed by rapeseed fields in July, and Xining is a friendly provincial capital where Tibetan, Hui and Han cultures meet. Ta’er Monastery nearby is one of the great Gelug monasteries. The altitude is above 2,200 metres, so take it slowly. June to September is the best time, and winters are bitterly cold.
