Golestan Province lies in the north-east, between the Caspian Sea and the Turkmen plains. Golestan National Park, Iran’s oldest, covers forest and steppe where leopards and deer roam. The 11th-century Gonbad-e Qabus tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, soars from the town of the same name, and the provincial capital Gorgan offers pleasant parks and old mosques. Turkmen horse-riding culture is a feature of the plains, and the area is rich in waterfalls and mountain villages. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
