Nara tour packages take you to Japan’s first permanent capital, founded in 710. Nara Park is home to hundreds of tame deer, Todai-ji holds one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world, and Horyu-ji is among the oldest wooden buildings on earth. Further afield lie Yoshino, a mountain of cherry blossom, and Asuka, with ancient tombs and stone carvings. Nara is a compact, walkable and relaxed alternative to Kyoto, only about 45 minutes away, and it is easily visited as a day trip or an unhurried overnight stop.
