Toyama tour packages are best known for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a journey by cable car, trolley bus and ropeway across the Northern Alps with a famous ‘snow wall’ in spring. The prefecture also protects the thatched Gokayama villages, a UNESCO site, and has a bay famous for firefly squid and fresh sushi. Toyama City adds an art-filled glass museum and a tram-linked centre. The Alpine Route normally runs from mid-April to late November, so check dates before planning.

Mid-April to June for the Alpine Route snow wall, and mid-October for autumn colour. Winter brings heavy snow and is better for city and seafood visits.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen takes about two hours 10 minutes from Tokyo to Toyama. The Alpine Route starts near Toyama and ends in Nagano, or in reverse.
