Northern Borders Region lies along Saudi Arabia’s frontier with Iraq and is the least visited of the 13 regions. Its capital Arar is a desert town known for the spring harvest of truffles, called faqaa, that attract Saudi families into the desert. The landscape is vast and flat, with Bedouin traditions still strong, and wildlife such as gazelles lives in protected reserves. Facilities for tourists are basic, and travel near the border can be restricted, so check official advice and plan with a local operator. Most visitors come in winter and spring.

Late winter to spring, from February to April, is best, when the desert is green and truffles are in season. Summers are very hot.
Arar has a domestic airport with flights from Riyadh and Jeddah. The drive from Riyadh takes about twelve hours.
