Kızkalesi, the Maiden’s Castle, rises from the sea off the shore at Erdemli, and the sinkholes called Heaven and Hell lie close by in Narlıkuyu.The birthplace of St Paul, Tarsus, has a well, a Roman gate and an old quarter, while Silifke and Anamur have medieval fortresses and Roman remains. Mersin city itself is a big port with seafront promenades. It is much less commercial than Antalya, making it ideal for travellers who prefer quiet beaches and history.
