County Carlow tourism covers Ireland’s second-smallest county, a gentle patch of farmland and river valley in the south-east. Its main draws are the 5,000-year-old Browne’s Hill Dolmen, which has the heaviest capstone in Europe, and the colourful Altamont Gardens, often called one of Ireland’s finest. The Barrow Way towpath follows the River Barrow for walkers and cyclists, and the Blackstairs Mountains rise on the eastern border. Carlow is easy to visit as a short stop between Dublin and Kilkenny, about an hour by road from either city.

May to September is best for gardens and riverside walks. The snowdrop season in February also draws garden lovers to Altamont.
A half day covers the dolmen and Carlow town, and a full day adds Altamont Gardens. Most travellers pair it with Kilkenny.
Carlow is about 80 kilometres south-west of Dublin and reached in roughly an hour by road. Direct trains from Dublin Heuston take around an hour and a quarter.
