Milford Sound is the headline, with sheer cliffs, waterfalls and dolphins visible from boat cruises. Doubtful Sound is longer, quieter and wilder. Te Anau is the lakeside base, and Stewart Island, reached by ferry from Bluff, offers kiwi spotting in the wild. Expect rain, which fills the waterfalls spectacularly. Summer from December to March is the most popular season, and a day trip to Milford is possible from Queenstown.

December to March is warmest and has the longest days. Milford Sound is spectacular after rain, so even wet weather can be rewarding.
A Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown is possible, but two to three nights at Te Anau are more relaxed. Add a night for Doubtful Sound.
Milford Sound is about 4 hours by road from Queenstown or 2 hours from Te Anau. Coach tours, scenic flights and self-drive options all operate.
