Wellington tour packages centre on New Zealand’s compact, creative capital, set around a deep harbour and ringed by green hills. Te Papa, the national museum, is free and spectacular, the cable car climbs to the Botanic Garden, and Cuba Street is full of cafés, vintage shops and live music. The wider region includes the Wairarapa wine villages, the Kāpiti Coast and the wild south coast. Wellington is windy, so pack layers. Allow two to three days, and visit between November and April for the most settled weather.

December to March has the calmest, warmest weather, although wind is possible all year. Autumn is clear and quiet, and winter is mild but wet.
Two days cover Te Papa, the waterfront and the cable car. A third day suits Zealandia or a Wairarapa wine tour.
Fly to Auckland or Sydney and take a domestic connection of about one hour to Wellington Airport. The ferry from Picton on the South Island is another popular arrival route.
